After Benghazi those who listened to Obama blame an "offensive" video for the attack and murder of US diplomats understood an American president had just sent the wrong message to the world about America's free speech rights, our First Amendment. An American president for the first time in our history blamed our US Constitution for allowing dangerous, irresponsible speech.
While he didn't call for official sanction against the filmmaker (he had him imprisoned on other charges), he coordinated with Big Tech to censor it and apologized to the world at the UN for our "flawed" free speech liberties with a faint, “my hands are tied” defense of it. Instead of standing up for our constitutional rights and saying while we don't endorse the sentiments of all our speech that others may find offensive our free speech values strengthen us. Freedom Fox identified it then as dangerous to the republic. Our president's job is to sell our nation's ideals of liberty and freedom to the world, not apologize for them and appease global totalitarian critics.
We are now living in a nation that has adopted Obama's (and prevailing worldview outside the US) interpretation of free speech. Calling it dangerous and calling for censorship by Big Tech, the sidestep from official government sanctions for it. When we let these little transgressions against our constitutional rights happen they always come back to haunt us. The age-old "camel's nose under the tent" adage applies.
White House Contacted YouTube About Anti-Muslim Film During Benghazi Attack, Congressman Says, Hollywood Reporter, May 23, 2014
”A still-classified State Department email says that the White House reached out to YouTube about the controversial Innocence of Muslims video while the September 2012 Benghazi attack was still going on.”
"But Issa said the email contradicts the White House’s assertion that it was the CIA that first blamed the attack on protests to the anti-Islamic video, since the message was sent before the CIA began its process of compiling talking points.
“The e-mail shows the White House had hurried to settle on a false narrative — one at odds with the conclusions reached by those on the ground — before Americans were even out of harm’s way or the intelligence community had made an impartial examination of available evidence,” Issa told ABC News.
The White House did request that YouTube remove the Innocence of Muslims trailer but Google denied the request, saying that it “restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these two countries.”
Whether Google is obligated to remove the clip is now the subject of a lawsuit filed by an actress in the video who claims she owns a copyright in her performance”
Obama-Clinton Blaming Video For Benghazi Attack Did More To Incite Than The Filmmaker Himself, CNS News, October 23, 2012
“Obama and Clinton repeatedly promoted the video scenario and kept talking about it to the world, indeed the entire Arab world. Every minute they kept blaming a video was a minute they were adding fuel to the fire. Indeed, they created the fire to begin with by heightening the video scenario. They played a larger role than the filmmaker himself.
Unlike the producer of the film, a Coptic Christian, who could well have made the film as a result of suffering under the hands of Islamists and wishing to warn people, Clinton, Rice and Obama promoted a video scenario for their own selfish political reasons. Hard core leftists are historically skillful at this modus operandi: blame and castigate someone else for doing the very thing you are doing.
So much of the devastation that happened during those two weeks came about by politicians who knew exactly what would happen.”
